WOMENS SOCCER ADVANCES IN REGION XIX PLAYOFFS

Lincroft - With three of its top players handicapped with significant injuries, the Brookdale women’s soccer  team  (10-3-1)  still managed to dominate the game from start to finish in a impressive 4-0  win over Manor (7-8-1) in first round region 19 playoff action.

Starting out fast and applying immediate offensive pressure, the Jersey Blues got on the board at the 8:40 mark of the first half. Deep in the right corner, Maggie Lowey (Ocean Twp) found a streaking Danielle Santoro (Tinton Falls) who fed Kathleen Flannigan (West Long Branch) right in front of the box for her seventh goal of the season and 1-0 lead.

Feeding off the adrenaline of the moment, Brookdale struck again when Devon Hope (Howell) intercepted a Blue Jay pass at mid field, led the ball perfectly to Catherine Lovallo (Old Bridge) who’s pin point pass to Alexandria Balsirow resulted in her fifth goal of the season and a 2-0 half time lead.

Excellent defensive play by Kelsey Clayton, Devin Hope and Aly Kent limited Manor to 1 shot on goal in the first half which in turn created numerous scoring opportunities for Brookdale and kept the Manor women in check.

As the second half played out much the same way as the first, Maggie Lowy brought the crowd to its feat with an incredible 30 yard pass from the far corner. Danielle Santoro located the pass in front of net and slammed it home, her team leading 13th goal of the season and a 3-0 lead.

Kathleen Flannigan closed out the scoring (84.10), her second of the game and eighth of the season. Haley Unger (Eatontown) and Catherine Lovallo assisted on the play.

With this impressive 4-0 playoff win, Brookdale marches into the second round with  renewed  confidence and a Region XIX championship in their sights.

Brookdale and Ocean Team Up to Fight Cancer

Lincroft, NJ and Toms River, NJ - Cross county rivals on any other night, but the two shore conference community colleges were on the same team for the inaugural Kick it to Cancer Night.

The men’s and women’s soccer teams of Brookdale Community College and Ocean County College all donned supportive colors to raise awareness and funds for breast and bladder cancer during their matches on Tuesday evening.

Both men’s squads, who faced off at Brookdale’s home field in Lincroft, Monmouth County, supported breast cancer with Ocean sporting pink warm-up shirts and Brookdale wearing pink athletic tape and pink sweat bands.

At Ocean County College, the Viking women also showed support of breast cancer with pink warm-up shirts, while the Brookdale women wore yellow shirts for bladder cancer.

The efforts did not just end on the soccer field. The Brookdale teams carried over the Kick it to Cancer event onto campus, setting up a table in the Student Center to sell chocolate covered pretzels and the Ocean teams raised funds throughout the week in an internet campaign to friends and family and at a bake sale during the women's game.  All proceeds raised by both teams will go to benefit the cause.

A Short-Handed Women's Soccer Team Suffers Second Loss of the Season

Lincroft, NJ - Playing without second-team All-Region goalie Elyse Umansky (Freehold Borough) the Brookdale women’s soccer team (7-2-1) fought gallantly but came up empty in a 3-2 loss to the streaking Gloucester  Community College Roadrunners (6-6-1).

With defender Maggie Lowy (Ocean Township) stepping into the goalie spot for the first time, a total team effort was needed if the Jersey Blues were to come out on top.

But before Lowy had a chance to get comfortable in goal, a bad bounce resulted in Gloucester’s Julia Cendejas’s fourth goal of the season just 30 seconds into the game.

Brookdale regrouped and controlled the play when Catherine Lovallo’s (Old Bridge) shot off the post was rebounded then netted by Alexandria Baistrow (Howell) for a exciting bang bang goal, tying the game at one.  The score was Balsirow’s fourth of the year.

Brookdale kept the pressure on with tight defensive play by Aly Kent (Lacy) and Kelsey Clayton (Howell), but Dawn Dixon’s loose ball pick up and pin point pass to Amanda Addezio in the far right corner led to Addezio’s lazer shot sneaking in just under the cross bar for a 2-1 lead at the 29:50 mark.

Perhaps a bit deflated, less then a minute later, the Blue’s gave up a goal during a scramble in front of their goal. Julie Cendejas was credited with 5th goal of the season.

Right before the half Kathleen Flannigan’s header off a pass from Devon Hope was deflected off goal by Shelby Sutton, an incredible save and the half ended 3-1 Gloucester.

The second half began with end to end action with no real scoring threats until Kelsey Clayton’s shot (68:00) from 30 yards out was deflected by Sutton off the cross bar for another brilliant save.

Then Kathleen Flannigan blasted one home with under 10 minutes remaining, an unassisted shot from 40 yards out, to close within one, 3-2.

But that’s as close as Brookdale got, as Gloucester’s defense stepped up during the final, crucial juncture of the game.

Brookdale Women's Soccer Primed for Late Season Run

Lincroft, NJ  – The Brookdale women’s soccer team recorded its third straight shutout in a dominant start to finish 6-0 win over Camden County College (1-7), Tuesday at Brookdale.

Daniella Santoro recorded her ninth goal of the season at the 4:48 mark of the first half and the Jersey Blues never looked back. Catherine Lovallo and Coral McKee each added goals to extend the lead to 3-0 at the half.

A stifling defense led by Devin Hope, who recorded two assists in the contest, and Aly Kent (one assist) completely shut down Camden’s offense resulting  in relentless pressure by the Brookdale attackers.

The second half was more of the same as Ana Meneses registered her first goal of the season and Alexandra Balsirow kept the onslaught going with her second and third goals of the season.

Brookdale, rated seventh, in the most recent NJCAA Division III poll seems primed and ready for a late season run into the playoffs.
